Volunteer Roles in Surf Life Saving
The Lakes Surf Life Saving club welcomes a wide variety of volunteers, both short and long-term, swim and non-swim roles.There are both water-based and non-water based volunteer roles in surf life saving.

Non Water Volunteers
Surf club non-swim and non-water-based volunteer roles:
Surf club Director or Committee member – help support a local community club by sharing ideas and decision about how to keep the club great, up-to-date, and strong into the future (Roles include: President, Vice President, Administrator, Treasurer, Director of Life Saving, Director of Education, Junior Activities Coordinator, First Aid Officer, Radio Officer, IRB Captain, Little Ripper Coordinator, Age Manager
Social events committee – help plan and run activities to help club members learn more about each other, have fun and share time with like-minded people
Fundraising team – help plan and run activities that raise funds for the club to provide life saving services, equipment, training and development
Club communications and social media role – help share the word about club activities and achievements so members know what is happening in the club and can help share in the clubs success
Clubhouse and club equipment care and maintenance – use your skills and experience to help in a variety of ways from woodworking, fibre glassing, transport of goods for repairs
Grant writer – learn about grant opportunities and write applications to seek funds for club priorities such as first aid equipment, radios, water safety gear, patrol retention , building & maintenance upkeep, representative teams & trips,
Education and training – assist club members train for events and maintain life saving skills
Unmanned aerial vehicle/ drone pilot – complete drone operator training and carry out drone operation services for surf life saving
Radio patrol operator – monitor radio equipment charging, manage radio servicing and run radio skills training for club members
First Aid patrol member – a variety of roles are available under first aid once the surf life saving first aid course has been completed for example: assist with the management of first aid room, equipment supplies and care and offer first aid role on patrol and at life saving events such as carnivals
First Aid provider for community events – provide first aid services for community events to raise the profile of the club in the community and in return for donations towards club funding priorities
Surf carnival land-based officials – complete the surf carnival officials course and carry out official duties for the club at life saving carnivals and events. A wide variety of roles are available including marshalling, athlete management, line judge, race place recording, race calling, judge, timekeeper
Age Manager – participate in the organisation of young children in the nipper program to help them gain skills in beach activities that build their life skills, sporting skills and skill them as future volunteer lifesavers
Nipper program helper – help nipper leaders to manage groups of children participating in the club nipper program so the club does not need to turn away children wanting to join and get involved.
BBQ crew – assist the club to provide cooked food for members at club events and for the public at community events and help members engage in club social activities as well as raise funds or the club
Water Based Volunteer Roles
Club training water safety – complete the surf life saving bronze medallion and help supervise club athletes in water-based activities and events such as nippers junior training, senior training
Surf Rescue Certificate – an entry level qualification for young people to get started I surf life saving land and water-based activities that help prevent drowning
Surf life saving bronze medallion/ patrol member – the training course that qualifies volunteers to patrol on the beach, carry out water=-based life saving activities, assist with water cover at life saving events, carnivals and competitions
Club training and club surf events water safety – use your lay person qualifications to help train club members in running, sprinting, relay running, swimming, paddling a board, paddling a ski and beach flag events. Carrying our water safety roles in the water at club training, events, carnivals and competitions with a rescue tube or a rescue board
Surf carnival official – besides beach officials, there are some water-based officials roles such as marshalls, Starters, Check Starter, Finishing judges
Patrol captain – complete the patrol captains award to become a patrol captain for beach patrol throughout the life saving season, managing the patrol team members, placement of the patrol area, oversee layout and preparation of patrol equipment so the patrol rescue ready
Rescue boat crew and driver – complete surf life saving inflatable boat (IRB) training to crew or drive an IRB on patrol and for water safety at club events and carnivals
Emergency Call Out Team surf life saving – complete extra search and rescue training to participate in call out operations and out of hours searches and rescues for surf life saving
Emergency services flood volunteer – complete emergency services flood rescue training to participate in call out operations and out of hours roles including search and rescue in conjunction with other emergency services such as SES and flood rescue.
